It’s nearly impossible not to feel homesickness for this place; for the way the ocean made everything right, tousling hair, salt-slicking shoulders, lulling us to sleep at night. It’s hard not to long for the way the trade winds blew, the way our became curly, and there was always the ocean to watch and fruit to cut, sweeter than from the mainland, with fingers to lick afterwards.

These photos are great!
Thanks Corrine!
Seeing these pictures reminds me how I love your photography! Instagram and iphoneography is so wonderful, but I sometimes miss the quality of real camera pictures. Am picking up my camera more. And glad to see you had your camera with you in HI!
We’ve been wanting to get back to Hawaii too. Maybe next time we’ll go together? A happy thought.
Ha! My gorgeous Nikon D7000 will be shuddering as I write this: but I didn’t bring it with me. These are all iPhone photos, Willow! :)
Simply beautiful – hope to visit someday.
Oooo, I love the new design of your site, especially since we get to see your gorgeous images on a grander scale. Have yet to go to Hawaii—we always think it’s too long of a flight to stay in the US and if we want to fly out that way, might as well go to Thailand, but I keep getting fwapped in the face with spectacular photos like yours or stories from friends’ trips and I think I’m beginning to learn that Hawaii deserves a trip.
Thanks for sharing these glimpses from your holiday!
PS. I just went through boxes of old correspondence and came across two things from you—a piece of your art from our postcard swap of 2006 and a Christmas card and note from the same year. So sweet to see again and remember those old “mytypography” and “vespa-rossa” blog addresses ;)!
Your photos are amazing! I’m so glad your family had the chance to take this vacation. I’ve only been once, when I was 9, but I still have such fond memories. Someday I’ll go back (but we’ve got a trip to Paris to plan first! :D).
Oh, it is beautiful. I know exactly where you got that paper plate of shrimp. I don’t remember them being breaded, though. My husband and I went there three days straight for lunch…delicious. Hawaii is such a special place. Did you go to any other islands? Or did you stick to Oahu? I hope some day I can visit there again, and I hope my kids get to go as well.
Thanks for a taste of the ocean in the middle of winter. xoxo
